Morning routines.
What morning routines do you have, and why are they so important?
Let me give you some examples of morning routines almost everyone has.
The alarm goes off and the first thing you do is look at your phone. You check your WhatsApp messages and emails. A quick look at Facebook and Instagram and then off to the coffee.
The coffee is brewing, you make breakfast, and while you eat it you are already thinking about everything you still have to do today.
A quick brush of the teeth, into the shower and hastily choose your clothes.
You make yourself presentable for the day and drive to work.
There will be exceptions, but this is a large part of our morning routines.
What's the nice thing about this? You always do it. Whether you slept brilliantly, had a bad night, have a cold or a very important appointment. It's so ingrained in your system that it's automatic. Great, isn't it?
What if we develop morning routines that help us reach our goals? If we turn the tasks that need doing into an automatic morning routine? Then it no longer matters how your night was, what your day looks like or how you feel; you just do it automatically. Isn't that great?
If I can't keep a promise to myself, I certainly can't keep one to someone else.
Of course this sounds easier than it is. Brushing your teeth was also drilled into you by your parents from a young age.
So how do you go about making this work?
First think about what you can do to start the day better.
If you wake up restless with a whole to-do list in your head, try a short meditation.
It sounds like a cliché, but also don't grab your phone straight away. Those apps will wait until you're ready.
Still tired when you wake up? Get your body moving. This gets your heart working, your blood flowing faster and oxygen through your veins.
Let me briefly share my morning routine:
I get up and drink 3 glasses of water to hydrate. Then I take a moment of rest and meditate for 10 minutes.
This means my head isn't immediately busy with everything that has to happen today and tomorrow, and I'm in control of how my day starts.
Unfortunately evening workouts aren't an option for me, so I plan them after meditation. For just under 20 minutes I train intensively with my own bodyweight or kettlebells. This makes me feel fit, active and strong.
I made this promise to myself and I stick to it. If I can't even keep a promise to myself, I certainly can't keep one to someone else.
It also has a positive effect on my mindset. Before the day has really started, I have already reached goals. I start the day positive and proud of myself.
This has now become a routine, and if I don't do it, it doesn't feel right.
Do you ever forget to brush your teeth, for whatever reason? You're in bed and it doesn't feel fresh. You still get up to brush your teeth. If you can create the same effect with goals that move you forward in life, we're talking about a great morning routine!
